Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving is exactly a week away and so the planning begins.

This Thanksgiving will be a particularly special one because it will be the first time in 11 years that I have spent Thanksgiving with my mom.

A long time, I know, and the why and how of that length of time is almost as long of a story.

So this Thanksgiving my thanks and gratefulness are focused on things such as human resilience, grace, forgiveness, hope.

The souls around my Thanksgiving table are imperfect and they have known struggle.  Me and my people.  Humanity.

We all have stories, stories of those dark moments in our lives.  The stories where we were in a place that felt hopeless and yet grace reached down and we somehow found the strength to pick ourselves up and move forward, sometimes one baby step at a time and with each step our hope grew and we began to prevail.

The stories around my Thanksgiving table are stories of living with mental illness, battling addiction, pushing through depression, surviving prison, having heartbreaking hope through marital turmoil.  These are the stories of real life.  These are the stories that connect us and they are the stories that prove to us that we need one another.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
